Threatened New iPad Tablet Android & Windows 8
Apple is still a king of tablet computers, with the total units sold in the range of 50 million units. But the greater challenge from a rival even though now they have released the latest generation iPad.
Significant feature is the addition of Retina Display screen and connectivity of 4G LTE. "This screen is a prominent feature for non-techie consumers, as well as fast connectivity. I think they gave an additional update that is enough," said Michael Holt, an analyst at Morningstar.
But there is also a contrary opinion. "Although the hardware increases the retina's impressive screen, better camera and faster processors, there are still some areas that need doing Apple in order to stay ahead of competitors," said Fred Huet of Greenwich Consulting was quoted by Reuters.
"At the plural tablets are used for personal media consumption, it is promising to see the screen better resoulsi. But whether this will be enough to ensure competitive leadership in the market Apple? No," he added.
Currently, Apple's main competitor Android tablet coming from vendors such as Amazon, Samsung and Motorola. In his presentation when introducing new iPad, Tim Cook showed the appearance of new iPad application is better than the Galaxy Tab. A sign that he takes into account Samsung tablet.
Another competitor to watch out Apple is worth 8 of Microsoft's Windows tablets are likely to slide this year. Some experts say Windows 8 is a more serious threat than Android tablet.
"Overall I think Microsoft would be a more serious contender than Android, because I still do not understand what Google is trying to achieve. Their focus is on some revenue from advertising that makes them less attention to the device, user experience," said Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner.
However, Android still not be underestimated, especially when they are dominant in the smartphone market and tremendous potential in the tablet PC. Especially the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet sold 3.9 million units in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2011, with 14.3% market share. Kindle Fire is by far the strongest competitor iPad.
